The Sanctuary of the Lord Jesus of Miracles is located in the parish of Milagres, in the municipality of Leiria. Situated on a small elevation, this place is integrated into the landscape of the Serra do Porto de Urso. Its central position in the Monte Real and Carvide area makes it a visible and easily identifiable landmark for those exploring the Leiria region.
The history of this sanctuary has its roots in the 18th century, built around a significant event that gave rise to its devotion. It is said that a paralyzed man, Manuel Francisco Maio, a resident of this place, was granted a miraculous cure after invoking the Lord Jesus, recovering his ability to walk. This event inspired faith and attracted a growing number of believers over time, leading to the construction of this temple dedicated to the miracles that occurred here.
The construction of the sanctuary began in 1732. Although the interior was completed around 1750, its imposing facade and towers were only finalized at the end of the 19th century, under the direction of architect Ernesto Korrodi. The dominant architectural style is the Baroque, lending the building a grand presence. Over the years, the sanctuary has undergone restoration work, aiming to preserve its structure and its unique beauty.
Over the centuries, the Sanctuary of the Lord Jesus of Miracles established itself as one of the great pilgrimage centers in Portugal, attracting thousands of devotees. The significance of its religious tradition was such that, during the 20th century, the influx of pilgrims was only surpassed by that of the Sanctuary of Fátima. This devotion remains alive, with the highlight being the annual celebration that takes place on September 14. This festivity is particularly known for its solemn procession of religious floats, a moment of great symbolism that continues to gather hundreds of people from all over the country.
