Situated in the tranquility of Regadas Cimeiras, a village in the municipality of Pedrógão Grande, the Chapel of Calvary is located on an elevated point. It boasts a harmonious and prominent placement, with a churchyard that unfolds in tiers. This space, flanked by two granite crosses and framed by a spacious tree-lined square, offers an environment of serene contemplation, integrated into the local landscape.
The Chapel of Calvary features simple religious architecture, characteristic of popular Portuguese tradition. Its white facade contrasts with the granite stonework finishes, lending it a discreet dignity. The southwest-facing frontispiece is marked by two regular windows and an oculus, elements that contribute to the natural lighting of the interior. At the top, an elegant bell tower with a cross, flanked by pinnacles, crowns the building's angular gable, making it a visual landmark in the locality.
Upon entering the chapel, one discovers a unique space, with a tile floor and walls clad halfway up with blue and white tiles, dating from the late 20th century. The wooden ceiling is divided into three planes, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The main altar, with its curved pediment, is the focal point and houses the Calvary ensemble, with the image of Christ Crucified, flanked by the Virgin and Saint Joseph. On the sides, two altars complement the space, integrating the images of Our Lord of Sorrows and the Lord of the Green Cane. Natural light, penetrating through the windows and oculus of the frontispiece, enhances the spirituality of the place.
Probably built in the 19th century, the Chapel of Calvary has undergone various interventions over time, including conservation and remodeling works in 1994, which contributed to its preservation. For the community, this place holds profound cultural and religious value. The chapel is one of the central stages during the Holy Week festivities, a time when the ritual of Christ's Crucifixion is re-enacted, strengthening the population's connection to its traditions and faith.
