Salgado Beach is located in Famalicão, an area belonging to the municipality of Nazaré. It is situated south of Nazaré's main urban area and north of São Martinho do Porto. This beach is notable for being flanked and protected by elevated formations: the Serra da Pescaria to the north and the Serra dos Mangues to the south, which give it a unique natural setting.
The sandy area of Salgado Beach stands out for its vast dimensions, extending for about six kilometers in length and with a considerable width of approximately one hundred meters. This amplitude gives the place a serene and tranquil atmosphere, ideal for long walks along the seashore. Its Atlantic waters are frequently rough, with waves characteristic of the Portuguese coast.
The beach is characterized by an extensive and well-preserved dune system, which becomes more prominent in the central area. This system presents two distinct areas: a dune zone closer to the sea, with embryonic vegetation such as marram grass, and a more distant primary zone, where plants like sea spurge, sea bindweed, and sea purslane thrive. In terms of fauna, it is possible to observe various species of coastal birds, such as the common tern, the goldfinch, and the sanderling, which find their natural habitat in this ecosystem.
The natural environment of Salgado Beach, with its wild landscape and the setting of the hills, creates a propitious scenario for various activities. The vast sandy expanse and the waves invite visitors to enjoy leisure moments and water sports. It is a recognized location for aerial sports, such as paragliding and hang gliding, which take advantage of the air currents provided by the coastal elevations. The southern part of the beach, with its rocks, is also a sought-after spot for sport fishing enthusiasts and divers. In the northernmost part of the sandy area, generally less frequented and more challenging to access, the practice of naturism is tolerated.
