Praia do Quebrado is located in the Forte da Luz area, an urbanized zone in Peniche. Its position offers a unique perspective on the coast and the sea. This stretch of coast is framed by remnants of an ancient defensive structure, which gives it a distinct and historically marked environment.
Situated east of the Peniche peninsula, the beach benefits from surroundings that combine proximity to the urban fabric with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean.
The name "Praia do Quebrado" (Broken Beach) derives from a significant historical event. This coastal area was protected by an imposing defensive curtain wall, erected between 1659 and 1671, which utilized the existing arm of the sea. However, the Great Earthquake of 1755 and the subsequent tsunami caused the destruction of part of this wall.
From that event, the damaged section of the structure became known as "Quebrado" (Broken), giving rise to the beach's current name. At low tide, visitors to the beach can still observe the remnants of the foundations of the old curtain wall, a tangible link to Peniche's military past. This area also converged with the Entrenchment of the Windmill Line, another defensive structure that reinforced the protection of the peninsula.
Praia do Quebrado features a small stretch of sand, delimited by the presence of the old wall and the sea. Its configuration creates a more sheltered environment. In the southern part of the beach, the sand is more uniform, making it more inviting for bathers. In the northern area, the presence of loose rocks on the sand gives it a more irregular texture.
This beach has traditionally been a haven for artisanal fishing boats. It is common to observe small vessels anchored near the coast, which underscores the beach's strong connection to local maritime life. In the past, this area also hosted a shipbuilding yard, revealing its importance for sea-related activities.
The atmosphere at Praia do Quebrado is one of tranquility, inviting contemplation of the coastal landscape. The location is ideal for those seeking a moment of calm, to stroll by the water, and enjoy the view. The interaction between the sea, the sand, and the remnants of the wall creates a unique scenic setting.
Due to its nature and configuration, direct access to the water can be slightly more challenging at some points on the beach, especially in the rocky area. For those traveling by car, there are parking possibilities in the vicinity, although at certain times it may be more limited.
