Praia do Portinho da Areia do Norte is located in the town of Peniche, within the urban area that gives it its name, Portinho da Areia do Norte. It is situated on the west coast of mainland Portugal, bathed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Characterized by a natural cove, this beach offers a unique perspective on Peniche's coastline. To the north, the Península da Papôa, a distinctive coastal formation of the area, can be seen. On days of good visibility, it is also possible to contemplate, in the distance, the silhouette of the Berlengas Natural Reserve.

A Natural Environment

This is a modest-sized sandy beach, nestled in a bay that protects it from stronger tides. Its physiognomy is marked by the presence of sand and also by rocky formations, the rock veins, which punctuate the waterline and the coastal surroundings.

The beach maintains a more genuine and tranquil atmosphere, distinct from more crowded locations. It is frequently sought after by fishermen, which contributes to an environment where the connection to the sea and local traditions is noticeably felt.

A Historical Legacy

Beyond its natural beauty, Praia do Portinho da Areia do Norte holds a chapter of maritime history. It was at this location that, on February 2, 1786, the burial of the victims of the tragic shipwreck of the ship San Pedro de Alcántara, belonging to the Kingdom of Spain, took place. This event imbues the beach with a significance that transcends the landscape, inviting reflection on past events.

The surroundings of the beach, particularly the cliffs that flank it, offer elevated points from which extensive views over the Atlantic can be appreciated. From these vantage points, the gaze extends over the sandy area, the bay, and the sea, revealing the rawness and beauty of the rocky coast.

The presence of the Península da Papôa on the northern horizon adds depth to the landscape, and the distant glimpse of the Berlengas completes a natural tableau of great breadth and scenic value, ideal for moments of contemplation.
