Located on Berlenga Grande, the largest island of the Berlengas Archipelago, belonging to the municipality of Peniche, Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro is nestled in a small cove. Its strategic location, next to the island's arrival pier, makes it easily accessible for those disembarking. The surroundings are marked by the geological uniqueness of Berlenga Grande, a granitic island where the low-lying vegetation contrasts with the pink-toned rock.
With approximately 40 meters in length, this is the island's only beach with sand and suitable conditions for swimming. The pink-colored sand, resulting from the erosion of the granite predominant on the island, invites relaxation. The waters are notably calm, clear, and transparent, ideal for a peaceful swim and for observing marine life in its natural habitat. The serene environment and the gentle sound of waves kissing the surrounding rocks create a scene of natural quietude.
The name Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro dates back to the existence of an old monastery on the site. This monastery, once a retreat, was eventually abandoned due to the challenges of island life, including resource scarcity and attacks by privateers and pirates who navigated these waters. Although today only discrete traces of the original structure remain, the beach's name perpetuates the memory of this part of the island's history, framed within a long path that leads to the sandy area.
