Praia das Rochas (Beach of the Rocks) is located in the coastal area of Consolação, in the municipality of Peniche. It is characterized by its position facing the Atlantic Ocean, framed by an imposing cliff with dwellings visible at the top. It is situated immediately south of the wall of the Forte da Praia da Consolação, offering an open view of the sea to the west.
Unlike beaches with extensive sandy areas, Praia das Rochas is defined by the prominent presence of rock formations. Its bed is mostly composed of large slabs, with a narrow strip of sand concentrated on the eastern side of the beach. This characteristic gives it a unique and distinct appearance on the coast.
This location is renowned for a natural particularity that attracts many visitors seeking well-being. It is believed that the marine environment, with its accumulation of natural iodine and sun exposure, contributes to the improvement of rheumatic and bone conditions. This alleged property is an uncommon feature in Europe, leading many to seek out the place, adapting to its rocks to take advantage of these benefits.
In addition to the properties associated with iodine, Praia das Rochas also has clay deposits within its rock formations. Some people use this clay directly on their skin, attributing benefits for skin and ligament problems. This practice, linked to local tradition, complements the natural uniqueness of the space.
Locally, Praia das Rochas is sometimes referred to as "Praia dos Velhos" (Old People's Beach). This name reflects its long history and the frequent visits by those seeking the natural benefits of the place, consolidating its identity as a space of tranquility and, for many, relief.
