Praia da Almagreira is located in the municipality of Peniche, in the locality of Ferrel, and is an oceanic beach, bathed by the waters of the Atlantic. It lies north of the Baleal area, extending along a coastal strip where the landscape is dominated by the presence of imposing cliffs, which uniquely shape its profile.
Its surroundings are characterized by a more secluded and natural environment, offering a wide perspective over the ocean. Access to the sandy area is via dirt roads, which contributes to the feeling of being in a more remote and preserved location.
This beach stands out for an extensive stretch of fine sand, extending for about one and a half kilometers. Its scenic beauty is enhanced by the ochre and sandy cliffs that punctuate the sandy area, creating a visually striking landscape. These rock formations not only define the beach's contour but also form natural nooks, offering areas more sheltered from the wind.
Along the coast, there are various cliff protrusions and even small caves, inviting a peaceful exploration and a closer appreciation of the natural elements that make up this space. The presence of rock formations like "Pedras Muitas" (Many Rocks) and "Pedra Ruiva" (Red Rock) enriches the diversity of the scenery.
Praia da Almagreira maintains a predominantly wild and untouched appearance, due to its nature and the absence of large support or surveillance infrastructures. This particularity gives it a more authentic and tranquil character, making it a refuge for those seeking to enjoy the sea in a calmer environment, away from the hustle and bustle of more frequented beaches.
Its more relaxed and open environment is also recognized as a place where naturalism is tolerated, reinforcing the atmosphere of freedom and direct contact with nature that characterizes this sandy stretch. It is, therefore, a sought-after destination for those who prioritize a more genuine and serene experience.
The waters of Praia da Almagreira are known for being agitated, making it a prime spot for water sports enthusiasts. Surfing and bodyboarding are particularly popular here, with the beach offering consistent waves that attract surfers of various levels. Currents and the presence of submerged rocks at low tide are natural elements to consider, part of its dynamic nature.
Besides wave sports, the beach offers opportunities for other sea-related activities. The rock formations, visible at low tide, are traditionally sought for fishing for octopuses and small fish, as well as for gathering shellfish, such as limpets and mussels, reflecting local uses and the biological richness of its coast.
The name Praia da Almagreira has deep roots in the history and practices of the local community. It derives from "almagre," a type of reddish clay that was abundant in the cliffs of this beach. In the past, this material was widely used by the people of Ferrel for various purposes.
Among its uses, "almagrar" (coating with almagre) of interior chimneys, fireplaces, and even kitchen floors stood out, giving them a characteristic hue. Additionally, in more distant times, during Carnival, the local boys used this almagre to write rhymes and messages on walls and fences, often revealing secret relationships and passions, in a tradition that linked the beach to the social life of the community.
