The Municipal Museum is located in the town of Porto de Mós, integrated into the area known as Bairro de São Miguel. It is situated at an accessible point within the town's urban perimeter, making it easy to discover during a walk through the area.
With the aim of preserving the region's identity, the Municipal Museum of Porto de Mós gathers and presents the historical, cultural, and natural heritage of the municipality. It is a space that seeks to connect the past to the present, showcasing various facets of the territory and the communities that have inhabited and continue to inhabit it.
A significant part of the collection invites a journey through time. Pieces are exhibited that bear witness to human presence and historical transformations in the area, with a highlight on archaeological finds from the Roman and medieval periods. There is also a section dedicated to inscriptions and epigraphic elements collected from different locations within the municipality.
The museum also explores the geological and paleontological heritage of the region. Collections of rocks, minerals, and fossils are presented, telling the story of the territory's formation. There is also a section dedicated to the exploitation of natural resources, particularly the activity related to the Lena river coal basin.
Beyond the deep history of the land, the museum preserves memories of daily life and the activities of the populations. Through the ethnographic core, it is possible to learn more about customs and traditions, land-related work, and how people lived. A particular point of interest is the ceramic collection from the historic Real Fábrica do Juncal, which operated between 1770 and 1876, reflecting the artisanal production of the era.
