The Old Clock Tower is strategically positioned in the heart of Pombal, historically serving as a link between the old town and the more modern part of the city. This imposing medieval structure played a crucial role in the life of Pombal. Formerly known as the Porta da Vila (Town Gate), the Old Clock Tower served as a vital point of control and defense, regulating access to the fortified settlement. It was, essentially, a portal that marked the entrance and exit of the urban perimeter.
Its importance was enhanced in 1509 when, at the initiative of King Manuel I, a mechanical clock and a bell were installed here. This technological milestone for its time allowed the population of Pombal to regulate their daily routines by the sound of the hours, making the tower an even more central reference point in community life.
The Old Clock Tower features a robust architecture characteristic of medieval constructions. It is a square-based tower, built in stone, that culminates in a top adorned with merlons, typical defensive elements. Its profile is crowned by a conical spire that houses the clock's bell, giving it a distinctive silhouette.
Recognizing its historical and heritage importance, the Old Clock Tower was classified as a National Monument. In 2014, the structure underwent a careful restoration, which aimed to preserve its integrity and prepare the space to welcome visitors, allowing for a better understanding of its rich history.
