Location

José Matoso Park is located on a hillside, in the Quinta do Cabeço area, in the heart of the city of Leiria. Its position offers a tranquil and serene environment, integrated into the urban fabric, yet with the feel of a natural refuge. Its proximity to the altimetric profile that rises towards the Castle gives it a distinctive location, integrated into the Leiria landscape.

A Space of Memory

This park was conceived as a tribute to José Mattoso, a notable historian, native of Leiria, whose intellectual legacy is widely recognized. The park's name evokes his contribution to the study and preservation of Portugal's historical and cultural heritage, establishing a symbolic bridge between knowledge and the landscape of his hometown. It is a place that invites reflection on local history and culture.

An Urban Green Refuge

José Matoso Park offers a carefully planned green area, ideal for those seeking tranquility and well-being. The space has been revitalized to provide inviting paths for walks, allowing visitors to explore the natural surroundings. Here, one can find corners designed for rest and contemplation, as well as areas dedicated to light physical activities. The old Pocinho Fountain, an integral part of the park, has also been redeveloped, contributing to the beauty and functionality of the environment.

History Revealed

The interventions carried out in the park have brought to light significant archaeological discoveries, enriching the understanding of the city's history. Near the Pocinho Fountain, remains of an ancient pavement were identified, believed to be a modern road over a medieval path, with a preserved section. Additionally, structures dating from the 16th and 17th centuries were revealed, underlining the fountain's importance as a water supply point and a place for social gathering for almost five hundred years. The discovery of a ceitil, a coin from the reign of D. Afonso V, suggests that the site's origins date back to the late 15th century, reinforcing its historical value.
