Jaime Filipe da Fonseca Park

Category: Nature > Park

District: Leiria > Leiria > Leiria > Bairro dos Anjos

Location

Jaime Filipe da Fonseca Park is located in Leiria, in the Bairro dos Anjos area, extending along the right bank of the Lis River. This park occupies a central position in the urban fabric, with its main entrance located in Largo Camilo Castelo Branco. Its longitudinal configuration follows the course of the river, offering a harmonious integration with the city's riverside landscape.

A Green Oasis in the Heart of the City

Recognized as Leiria's largest green space, the park offers a tranquil environment for walks and moments of relaxation. An avenue of imposing plane trees borders the river, providing shade and a pleasant setting. The terrain is mostly flat, facilitating circulation and enjoyment for those seeking a natural refuge in the urban environment.

Fun and Leisure for All Ages

This space was designed for recreation and leisure activities, featuring various areas conceived for different audiences. There are enclosures dedicated to games, allowing for outdoor sports practice. For the younger ones, a children's playground offers a safe and fun space. The entire area is delimited and organized by boxwood hedges and railings, imparting a sense of order and care.

Statues and Stories in Tiles

One of the park's most distinctive features is the presence of bronze sculptures by Anjos Teixeira (son), which represent animals linked to the region's rural daily life, such as the donkey, the dog, and the ox, as well as birds. Each of these sculptures rests on a base adorned with polychrome tile panels, which illustrate and tell stories through poems alluding to each animal. These artistic elements invite careful observation and and reflection on local culture.

The Park's Legacy and Renovation

The park's original project dates back to the 1930s, signed by architects Ernesto and Camilo Korrodi. Anjos Teixeira's sculptures were added in 1945, marking the fourth centenary of Leiria's elevation to city status. The name "Jaime Filipe da Fonseca" was given to the park in 1963, honoring a military and political figure native to Leiria. In the 21st century, in 2005, the park underwent a profound restructuring aimed at improving its functionality and connection to the river, integrating new infrastructures and spaces such as the Afonso Lopes Vieira Toy Library.
