The Engenho Park is located in the city of Marinha Grande, in the municipality of the same name, within the district of Leiria. Situated approximately one kilometer from the urban center, it benefits from its proximity to the extensive Leiria National Forest. Its location on Rua Parque do Engenho provides direct access and harmonious integration into the surrounding forest landscape.
This park is a place with a remarkable history, dating back to the 18th century. Between 1724 and 1774, a unique sawmill known as the "engenho" (mill) operated here, utilizing the hydraulic force of water, sourced from the Lis River, to saw timber. This initiative, driven by the Marquis of Pombal, aimed to facilitate the transport of logs to São Martinho do Porto, revealing the strategic importance of the timber from the Pinhal de Leiria for the kingdom. Despite its relevance, the mill's operational life was relatively short, ceasing its activity after a fire.
Within the park grounds, architectural vestiges that bear witness to this industrial and administrative past of the forest can still be observed. Old buildings that served as the sawmill, forest service administrations, stables, and even a church form a complex that evokes the multiple functions this location has fulfilled over time.
In the early 19th century, the Engenho Park was transformed, giving rise to nurseries for various forest species. This initiative contributed to shaping the space into the appreciated leisure environment it is today. The park offers direct contact with nature, featuring a variety of species that reflect the botanical diversity and natural heritage of the Leiria National Forest.
Due to its integration into the vast forest area of the Pinhal de Leiria, this location invites moments of tranquility and observation. It is a place where the history of forest management meets natural beauty, providing a relaxing environment that evokes the deep connection between the region and its ancient forest.
