The Church of Nossa Senhora das Neves is situated in the peaceful locality of Abiul, in the municipality of Pombal, nestled in the serene Adro Garden. Its position, set on an urban hillside, offers a tranquil setting and an unobstructed view, delineated from its surroundings by a low wall and landscaped areas. This location invites a moment of quiet contemplation, observing the religious architecture framed by the village atmosphere.
This parish church, classified as a Monument of Public Interest, is a remarkable example of religious architecture that has traversed centuries of history. Although its initial construction dates back to earlier periods, the church seen today primarily reflects interventions from the 18th century, when it acquired its expressive Baroque form. Inside, the simple longitudinal plan, with a single nave, reveals a chancel with a vaulted ceiling and a three-plane wooden ceiling, which lend the space a sense of spaciousness and solemnity. Its main facade, facing west, is preceded by a staircase and features a rusticated ashlar portal, topped by a triangular pediment and crowned by a cross flanked by pyramids, typical elements of the era's aesthetic. The square-based bell tower, with its dome roof, adds a distinct touch to the architectural ensemble.
The Church of Nossa Senhora das Neves surprises visitors with its artistic richness, which bears witness to different historical periods. On the side doors, both north and south, it is possible to discover Visigothic decorative elements on the lintels, remnants of a very ancient foundation and successive re-edifications. The interior is embellished by collateral and lateral altars displaying polychrome stone altarpieces, some of which date back to the 16th century, demonstrating a remarkable quality of execution. Particularly noteworthy is the chancel altarpiece, an 18th-century piece in white and gilded carving with solomonic columns, which houses a central crucifix. Additionally, the wall lining of the chancel, transept wall, triumphal arch, collateral chapels, and baptistery with tile panels from the first half of the 20th century, sourced from Fábrica da Fonte Nova in Aveiro, adds a vibrant chromatic and cultural dimension to the space. On the paved floor, beneath the choir, integrated tombstones are found, a reminder of the long history and lives connected to this place of worship.
