Porta do Vale, also known as Senhora da Graça, is one of the historic entrances to the walled village of Óbidos. Situated on the periphery of the old wall, in the area now known as Pinhal, this gate is integrated into the fortifications embracing the village. Its strategic position once allowed access for those arriving from the eastern side, leading visitors into the picturesque streets of Óbidos.
This gate, whose origins date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, played a fundamental role in Óbidos' defensive system. Initially named Porta do Vale, its current name (Senhora da Graça) is due to the existence of a unique chapel-oratory, built within its interior. This space of devotion was renovated in 1727 at the initiative of Bernardo de Palma, an India judge, in fulfillment of a promise linked to a tragic love story involving his daughter. The intervention transformed the simple passage into a place of worship, with an altar and choir, where the street passage itself is, in reality, the nave.
One of the most notable elements of Porta da Senhora da Graça is its stunning panel of blue and white tiles. This work of art, also dating from the 18th century, depicts Nossa Senhora da Graça (Our Lady of Grace), flanked by angels supporting her crown. The panel is a beautiful example of the Portuguese azulejo tradition and reflects the strong religious devotion of the era. At dusk, the illumination of the gate and its tiles gives it a special charm, highlighting the intricate details and the depth of its symbolism.
