The Arch of the Chain (Arco da Cadeia) is situated in the heart of the village of Óbidos, intramuros, integrated into its medieval urban landscape. It is a distinctive point, as the pedestrian street traverses the building through one of its arches, making it an integral part of the route for those exploring the cobbled streets. Its position offers an authentic glimpse into the village's historical atmosphere, inviting a moment of contemplation.
This singular building, with its origins tracing back to the 14th and 15th centuries, played crucial roles in the life of Óbidos village. It is believed to have initially served as the Town Hall (Paços do Concelho), the administrative and political center of the time. There are also strong indications that its premises housed the old prison (cadeia), lending it a dimension of local history and justice.
Throughout the centuries, the building adapted and transformed. In the 16th century, with the construction of a new Town Hall nearby, the Arch of the Chain ceased its administrative functions. Subsequently, from the mid-20th century onwards, the property underwent adaptation works and has since been used as a private residence, reflecting the successive layers of history that the village of Óbidos preserves.
The Arch of the Chain is a notable example of the Gothic civil architecture present in Óbidos. It is characterized by its distinct pointed arches, built of stonework, which allow the street to pass through and create a unique experience for those who cross it. The main facade, with its windows, some of them mullioned, and other stone elements, contributes to the rustic and charming beauty of the ensemble.
The two-story structure, with the ground floor open to the public street through the arch, and the gabled roofs, are features that complement its aesthetics and robustness. The presence of a coat of arms on the upper facade is a detail that adds visual interest to this construction, making it a place of remarkable architectural and historical value.
