The Fort of São Miguel Arcanjo is located in Nazaré, in an elevated position overlooking the beach, offering a spectacular view of the town and the Atlantic Ocean.
Built from 1577 during the reign of D. Sebastião to protect against pirates, the fort underwent several renovations over the centuries. It is a monument classified as being of Public Interest since 1978.
It witnessed events of the French Invasions and the Liberal Wars in Portugal, being a symbol of local resistance against foreign occupations.
Since 1903, it has housed a lighthouse that still assists in maritime navigation today, with a luminous range of fifteen nautical miles.
It presents a Mannerist style with robust walls and strategically positioned bastions, in addition to a portal with a worn image of São Miguel Arcanjo, patron saint of the fort.
In addition to guided tours that explore its military history, the fort is a privileged observation point for giant wave lovers, especially during the famous Nazaré surf event.
Despite being well preserved, it faces challenges due to coastal erosion, which highlights the continued importance of preservation efforts.
