The National Wine Museum is located in the town of Alcobaça, within the Vestiaria area. Its establishment in a place with a history linked to wine production is a relevant aspect of its location, placing it in an environment that reflects its theme.
This museum occupies the premises of an old winery, whose construction dates back to 1875. This building was commissioned by António Raposo de Magalhães with the purpose of developing local wine production. Its architecture reflects the practices and techniques of the era for wine production, giving it, in itself, a heritage value within the context of the history of the wine industry in Portugal.
The central core of the museum is its vast collection, considered the most complete nationwide on the theme of viticulture. It brings together thousands of pieces spanning an extensive period, from the 17th century to the early 21st century. The collection offers a detailed view of the evolution of techniques, tools, and equipment used in wine production, including artifacts related to enology, specific furniture, and elements of industrial archaeology. Its formation resulted, in part, from the gathering of materials from various sector-related structures, such as the former National Wine Board (Junta Nacional do Vinho), thus consolidating a heritage of great historical and cultural value.
