The Municipal Museum of Óbidos is located in the heart of the historic walled town. It is integrated into the picturesque setting of narrow streets and traditional white houses, characteristic of the town centre. Its position allows direct pedestrian access from the main points of interest in Óbidos' historic area.
The museum's collection comprises various pieces that reflect the region's cultural and historical richness. Most of the collection comes from the municipal estate, complemented by works loaned by parishes and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (Holy House of Mercy) of Óbidos. The focus is on sacred art, including painting, sculpture, and religious objects, as well as archaeological artefacts that tell part of the territory's oldest history.
The permanent exhibition and temporary shows offer a journey through the artistic production that shaped the town's life over the centuries. Religious art pieces, dating from the 15th to the 18th century, allow visitors to appreciate the talent of notable artists. Works by figures such as Josefa d'Óbidos, André Reinoso, Baltazar Gomes Figueira, and Belchior de Matos are highlighted, names that significantly contributed to Portuguese artistic heritage.
The selection of pieces on display in the museum serves as an important testament to Óbidos' history and the community's deep connection to faith. The works illustrate the influence of religious collegiate churches and the cultural dynamism driven by artistic commissions throughout the ages. In this way, the museum seeks to contextualise art in its social and religious role, showcasing the town's evolution through its heritage.
