The Monographic Museum of Bárrio is located in the town of Bárrio, part of the municipality of Alcobaça. Specifically, it is in the area known as Carrasqueira.
Its location is linked to a historically relevant area, situated on elevations that once overlooked the vast Lagoa da Pederneira (Pederneira Lagoon). This position offers a perspective on the surrounding landscape, referring back to the geographical context that shaped life in antiquity.
This museum serves as an interpretation center for the important archaeological site of the Roman Villa of Parreitas, discovered nearby. The villa is a testament to human occupation in the region, with evidence pointing to its existence between the 1st and 4th centuries AD.
The discovery of this site revealed significant layers of the area's history, showing a continuous habitation that extends over long periods, with roots that may go back to pre-Roman times, such as the Chalcolithic period.
Inside the Monographic Museum of Bárrio, visitors will find the collection retrieved during excavations at the Roman Villa of Parreitas. These artifacts are the primary source of information about the life that unfolded there.
The exhibited objects allow for an understanding of the daily activities of a rural community in the Roman era. They include remains related to agriculture, livestock farming, fishing (which would have been fundamental given the lagoon's proximity), pottery production, and textile work, painting a portrait of the local population's economy and customs.
