Situated in Largo de São Pedro, this museum is located near the surrounding area of Leiria Castle, within the urban zone known as Bairro dos Anjos. Its location, in the immediate vicinity of the city wall, offers close proximity to one of the city's central historical landmarks.
This museum is dedicated to exploring the universe of photography and cinema, fields that combine art, science, and technique. Its main collection brings together diverse objects illustrating the historical trajectory of cinematography.
It offers visitors an experience that invites the discovery of the mechanisms and creativity behind the moving image, transitioning between light, color, rhythm, and illusion itself, on a journey that explores the limits of imagination.
The museum was founded in the context of the centenary celebrations of cinema in Portugal, in 1996. It was officially established the following year, with the purpose of collecting, safeguarding, and studying heritage related to the moving image.
It functions as a space for memory preservation and, simultaneously, a platform for research and experimentation in this field. Its work has been recognized, having received important distinctions for its museological quality.
The m|i|mo is housed in a building with a unique identity: it occupies the former stables of Leiria Castle. The adaptation and renovation project for this historic space was designed by Portuguese architect José Charters Monteiro, providing the museum with a distinctive architectural foundation.
Beyond the display of its main collection, the museum is a dynamic space. It regularly hosts temporary exhibitions that delve into different themes related to the image. It also develops educational and recreational activities, creating opportunities for the public to practically explore the world of cinema and photography and engage in a dialogue about visual creation.
