Located in the heart of the municipality of Bombarral, in the district of Leiria, the Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal Museum is found in the picturesque Pátio das Cerejeiras (Cherry Tree Courtyard). This location immerses visitors in a markedly rural region of the Oeste (West), where the landscape is distinctly marked by the vast, fertile vineyards that characterize the surrounding area. The courtyard itself evokes a traditional atmosphere, intrinsically linked to the life and activities inherent to a historic estate.
The genesis of this cultural space is inextricably linked to the history of the Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal, an entity founded in the early 20th century by Abel Pereira da Fonseca. This prominent winegrower and entrepreneur established the company to manage his extensive wine-producing properties in the region, namely Quinta das Cerejeiras and Quinta do Sanguinhal, both in Bombarral, as well as Quinta de S. Francisco in Outeiro da Cabeça. Over time, the company expanded its influence to other municipalities, such as Cadaval, Alenquer, and Torres Vedras, consolidating a remarkable legacy in Portuguese wine production that spans more than a century.
In a later stage of its history, Abel Pereira da Fonseca focused his efforts on wine production in Bombarral and transferred his shareholding position to the Nunes Correia family. Since then, the company's management has been continued by this family, passing through generations and keeping alive the dedication and passion for viticulture that are the pillars of its identity.
The creation of the Companhia Agrícola do Sanguinhal Museum emerged from the growing demand for knowledge and the appreciation of wine tourism, making it possible to share this rich heritage with the public. The museum offers an authentic perspective on the evolution and practices of viticulture and winemaking over the decades. It is a space designed for experiences of discovery and experimentation, inviting a deep immersion into the region's heritage and wine culture, a living testament to the winemaking traditions of the Oeste region.
