The Memorial to the Victims of the 2017 Fires is serenely situated in the locality of Vila Facaia, more precisely in Barraca da Boavista, in the municipality of Pedrógão Grande, district of Leiria. This place of remembrance stands in the heart of a landscape deeply marked by the tragic events of 2017, offering a point of contemplation and homage in the very affected territory.
The conception of this Memorial is guided by serenity and profound symbolism. At its center, a vast lake stands out, with an approximate area of 2500 square meters, whose water is continuously fed by a remarkable gargoyle extending for 60 meters in length. This vital and reflective aquatic element is bordered by a carefully curated strip of plants that includes white lilies, lilies, and ranunculus, chosen for their beauty and the meaning they evoke. The presence of water, along with these flowers, symbolizes purity, renewal, and the perennial homage to the memory of the lives that were lost there.
This monument invites visitors to a moment of deep introspection and respect. Its architecture and the natural elements that compose it create an environment conducive to reflecting on the magnitude of the tragedy and the strength of human resilience. The Memorial serves as a solemn reminder of the pain felt, but also of the capacity for overcoming and the importance of collective memory so that such events are never forgotten, reinforcing the connection with the territory and its recent history.
