The Bombarral Municipal Woods is located right in the heart of the town. It is a considerable and distinct green space integrated into the urban fabric, serving as a prominent natural element in Bombarral's built landscape.
Its central location makes it easily accessible to those visiting the town, providing a serene counterpoint to the surrounding urban environment.
These woods are a natural refuge that preserves characteristics of a distant past. They represent a sample of the vegetation that, many centuries ago, dominated the region. For this reason, it is often seen as a "living museum" of the original local flora.
Here one finds a remarkable diversity of species typical of the Mediterranean forest, such as cork oaks, strawberry trees, mastic trees, and laurels. Some tree specimens reach unusual sizes, with cork oaks exceeding twenty meters in height, showcasing the maturity and natural value of this location.
The presence of certain orchid species demonstrates the interesting degree of ecological preservation of the woods, an indicator of the environmental quality that is maintained despite its urban location.
The reason why this green area survived in the town center is linked to its history. Initially, it was a reserved hunting ground, at least since the 15th century, used even by the court.
Later, it was transformed into a private garden. Both its original function as a hunting ground and its later one as a private garden ensured that this area was maintained and preserved, escaping the urban expansion that surrounded it.
Since 1941, the woods have been classified as an Area of Public Interest and became a Municipal Park, formally recognizing its value and importance to the community and visitors.
