In 1323, this space was the stage for an event of great relevance: the holding of a lavish banquet that publicly celebrated the oath of peace between King D. Dinis and his son, Prince D. Afonso IV, an event sealed in the Igreja Matriz of Pombal. This landmark moment in Portuguese history earned the place its perpetuation as Várzea do Bodo, a name that still echoes its importance today.

Design and Natural Elements

The layout and beauty that can be observed today in the Jardim da Várzea are the result of a recovery and enhancement project carried out in the 1930s. The intervention was carried out under the direction of the renowned landscape architect Jacinto de Matos. Among the elements that distinguish this garden, a quadrangular-based fountain stands out, notable for its architecture and detailed tile decoration. In addition, the space hosts various flowerbeds filled with aromatic herbs, which invite a sensory experience, and a variety of other plant species that enrich the local biodiversity.
