Situated in the old village of Pederneira, one of Nazaré's historical nuclei, this church stands on an elevated point, offering a unique perspective over the surrounding area. Its prominent position, with the main facade facing one of the most emblematic streets of the locality, makes it an easily identifiable landmark for those exploring this historic zone.
The history of the Pederneira Parish Church dates back to the 16th century, a period when Pederneira, then a village with its own charter granted by D. Manuel I in 1514, prospered as an important regional center. This temple has served the local community since its construction, witnessing centuries of life and traditions linked to the sea and the faith of Nazaré.
Observing the exterior, one notices the predominance of lines that blend the Mannerist style with Baroque elements. The light-colored facade is highlighted by the triangular pediment that tops it, where a cross and a clock are found. The modest bell tower, with its bulb-shaped finial, adds a distinct touch to the building's profile.
Inside, the church reveals a single nave, covered by a barrel vault. It is, however, the remarkable tile cladding that most captures the visitor's attention. The walls display an extensive collection of 17th-century tiles, in predominantly blue and yellow patterns, creating an enveloping and historic atmosphere. These patterned panels are complemented by "carpet" tiles and small emblematic pictures that punctuate the surfaces.
In the chancel, a historical detail gains special prominence: an inscription dated 1637 indicating that the chapel was tiled by the devotees of Saint Anthony, a direct testament to its history and devotion throughout the centuries.
In addition to the tilework, the church houses altarpieces and gilded carvings that enrich its heritage. The main altar features carvings in the National style, while the side altars display the influence of the Joanine period, denoting artistic evolution throughout the 17th and 18th centuries. The brotherhood's choir stalls, with their rich gilded carving ornamentation, are another artistic element of great value, reflecting the mastery of the artisans of the era.
