The Parish Church of Lagarteira, also known as the Church of Saint Dominic, stands imposingly in the center of the town of Lagarteira, in the municipality of Ansião. Its location gives it the status of a notable landmark in the area, inviting visitors to discover the local heritage.
The temple is surrounded by a walled churchyard, a space that offers serenity and invites contemplation. In these surroundings, next to the church, one can find a bandstand and an impressive centenary ash tree, elements that enrich the atmosphere of the place and call for a moment of rest and appreciation.
Built between the 17th and 18th centuries, the church reflects the characteristic religious architecture of the period. Its main façade is particularly noteworthy, harmoniously integrating the bell tower in the center, an architectural solution that gives a striking uniqueness to the ensemble. Despite the predominance of horizontal volumes, the bell tower culminates in a pyramidal spire, introducing a distinctive verticality that stands out in the landscape.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the Parish Church of Lagarteira underwent several restoration works. These interventions, naturally, have shaped its current appearance; however, they ensured the preservation of its original character and its profound historical and cultural relevance to the community that venerates it.
Inside, the temple features its high choir and a prominent pulpit. Both the main nave and the chancel display a three-paneled wooden ceiling, creating a sense of spaciousness and a welcoming atmosphere for visitors. Access to the chancel is through a triumphal arch, magnificently adorned with a polychrome wood bas-relief depicting the Holy Family, a detail of undeniable artistic and symbolic value.
The high altar, in particular, is dazzling with a reredos in gilded woodcarving, where the Solomonic columns, a decorative element typical of the 18th-century period, stand out. A pink marble balustrade adds a touch of distinction to the space. Complementing the nave's ensemble are two collateral altars with ashlar arches. The altar on the left is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, displaying two painted wooden panels. Both side altars feature Solomonic columns adorned with garlands and notable altarpieces, such as the one depicting the Flagellation of Christ on the left and Jesus in Agony with a chalice on the right. Of note is the lining of the back walls of these altars with 18th-century patterned tiles (azulejos), a detail of great historical and artistic value that enriches the space. On the chancel ceiling, a discreet painting shows an open book with the inscription «Jesus Cristo / Luz do Mundo» (Jesus Christ / Light of the World), conveying a message of faith and hope.
