The Batalha Mother Church is located in the heart of the village, in the locality of Batalha, municipality of Batalha. Its central position makes it an easily accessible and visible point within the urban fabric, set in an area that invites a peaceful stroll through its surroundings.
The construction of this parish church dates back to the early 16th century, having begun in 1514 under the reign of D. Manuel I. Its construction responded to the need of the growing local population for a larger temple, as the existing church could no longer accommodate the number of worshippers. The fundamental work was completed around 1532, and its original design, strongly influenced by the Manueline style, is attributed to renowned architects of the time, such as Diogo Boitaca. Over the centuries, the building underwent various interventions that added elements from the late-Baroque and Revivalist periods, without losing its 16th-century essence.
The main facade of the Mother Church is one of its most notable features, particularly its portal. This presents a striking Manueline style, with a richly worked polycentric arch. Within it, details such as faceted colonettes with vegetal capitals and grotesque decorations can be observed. In the arch's tympanum, decorative elements such as foliage and pinecones stand out. In the upper corners, carved in relief, the Cross of the Order of Christ and the Armillary Sphere, symbols of the era, are visible. Attached to one side of the facade, the more recently designed bell tower, with its pyramidal spire, completes the church's exterior ensemble, whose facades are defined by buttresses and arched windows.
Inside the church, the singular nave leads us to the chancel. Here, the imposing chancel arch and the ribbed vault of the chancel stand out, elements that retain their original 16th-century appearance. The main altarpiece, embedded in stone and adorned with polychrome marble, captivates the eye with its beauty. Equally notable is the stone baptismal font, a carefully designed piece. The walls and the altar frontal, covered with tiles of distinct patterns, contribute to the visual richness of the space, providing an atmosphere of reflection and appreciation for sacred art and the history of the place.
