The Church of the Most Holy Saviour of the World is located in the heart of the town of Bombarral, in Praça José Pereira de Carvalho. Its prominent placement in the town centre, opening onto a wide square, contributes to the urban environment. The church is situated in a central and easily accessible area, serving as a landmark in the local landscape.
This church, dedicated to the Most Holy Saviour of the World, is a significant example of 20th-century religious architecture. Its construction, begun in 1948 and inaugurated in 1953, followed dramatic events that led to the loss of the original temple. The old church, desecrated and vandalised in 1915, was completely destroyed by a large-scale fire in 1918, with its ruins demolished in 1924. The project for the new church was designed by architect Fernando de Barros Santa Rita, marking the resilience and rebirth of the local community.
The church's main facade features an expressive bas-relief, a work by sculptor Luiz Fernandes, created in 1953. This artistic element gives the building a unique identity. Inside the temple, there is an item of strong historical and symbolic value: the baptismal font. This piece is a link to the past, as it belonged to the old church and was preserved and later reintroduced into the new building in 1986, after being acquired and offered by a parishioner.
