Situated in the Rio Alcaide area, the Church of São Pedro is in the heart of the town of Porto de Mós. Its presence is a central element in the local urban fabric, serving as an easily accessible landmark for those exploring the town.

Historical Path and Architectural Features

The Church of São Pedro is a notable example of the Baroque style. Its history is closely linked to the Convent of the Discalced Augustinians, of which it was an integral part between 1676 and 1834. This conventual past shaped its identity and the features that can be seen today, revealing the importance the building held in the life of the town over the centuries.

The Interior: Artistic Richness and Unique Details

Upon entering the Church of São Pedro, the visitor is enveloped in an atmosphere that reveals a rich collection of artistic elements. The tower, with its ashlar quoins and four belfries, already heralds the beauty of the interior, which is revealed in detail as one explores the space.

Inside, one of the chapels, dedicated to the Lord of the Steps (Senhor dos Passos), stands out for its use of marbles of various shades from regional quarries such as Alqueidão da Serra, Chão de Maçãs, and Juncal, giving it a particular distinction.

The main altar and altarpiece, dating from the 18th century, display elegant marble work with shades of black, pink, and yellow. In this space, the remarkable image of the patron saint, Saint Peter, stands out. The chancel, in turn, is covered with 19th-century tile panels depicting significant biblical episodes, such as the miraculous catch of fish and the moment of the handing over of the keys to Saint Peter.

The temple also houses other altars that complement its decorative and religious richness. There are two collateral altars, dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception and Christ Crucified, and other side altars that honor the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Our Lady of Sorrows, and Saint Joseph with the Child.
