Located in the center of Alqueidão da Serra, a parish in the municipality of Porto de Mós, the Church of São José occupies a prominent position next to the main road that crosses the locality. This central location gives it great visibility and accessibility to those passing through the village.
Surrounded by a mountain environment, with views of the undulating landscape typical of the Leiria region, the church is set in a tranquil scenery, where it is possible to feel the calm rhythm of local life. Its imposing presence marks the community's meeting point and reinforces the connection between religious heritage and the surrounding space.
The current building of the Church of São José was erected over an older temple with the same invocation. The first mass in the new space was authorized in 1620, initiating its long history as a central place of the community's religious life.
Over the centuries, the church underwent several interventions that shaped its current appearance. The most significant took place between 1860 and 1899, a period during which the building underwent major structural and aesthetic alterations. More recently, between 1965 and 2005, maintenance works, though less profound, were carried out, contributing to preserve the building without substantially altering its configuration.
The church extends in a south-north direction, with the main portal facing north, a change from the original orientation, which faced south. This alteration, resulting from the 19th-century works, modified the building's relationship with the surrounding urban space.
The plan is rectangular, comprising a nave and chancel. The sacristy is attached to the left side of the chancel, while the square-based bell tower is on the right side, aligned with the main facade. This facade features a triangular pediment topped by pinnacles, with a straight lintel portal flanked by columns, upon which rests another, smaller pediment. Above, a window illuminates the choir loft, lending balance to the composition.
Beyond its religious function, the Church of São José is a central element in the communal life of Alqueidão da Serra. The building serves as a meeting point during festive and symbolic moments, reinforcing its importance as a space for gathering and local identity.
The surrounding environment is serene, marked by the presence of the mountains and the simplicity of the rural landscape. It is a place where architecture harmonizes with the surrounding space, creating a setting conducive to contemplation and contact with the more tranquil dimension of local culture.
