The Church of Saint John the Baptist is located in the Urbanization of Santa Iria, in the locality of Pinhal, an integral part of the municipality of Óbidos. Situated on a slight elevation, somewhat set back from the walled center, it is positioned near the historic Porta da Vila (Town Gate). Its location offers a clear view of the urban and rural surroundings, marking the landscape with its discreet yet significant presence.
The origin of this temple dates back to 1309, when Queen Saint Isabel ordered the construction of a chapel, then dedicated to Saint Vincent, and a leprosarium, a hospital intended to house leprosy patients. During the 16th century, the assets of the leprosarium and the Chapel of Saint Vincent were integrated into the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Óbidos (Holy House of Mercy of Óbidos). In 1636, the space was formally ceded to become the seat of the collegiate church and parish of Saint John the Baptist of Mocharro, thus adopting its current designation. Throughout the centuries, particularly in the 15th, 16th, and 18th centuries, the church underwent various works of expansion and restructuring, which gave it the appearance we observe today.
The Church of Saint John the Baptist displays a remarkable mix of styles reflecting its long history, with elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture. The building has a longitudinal plan, composed of the church body, the chancel, and the sacristy. The main façade, facing north, is marked by a rectangular portal in decorated stonework and a window that illuminates the choir and nave.
On the exterior, the cornerstones and buttresses in stonework, which delineate the structure, stand out, along with the rectangular bell tower, topped by a dome and adorned with pinnacles. The interior, with a single nave, features a three-plane coffered ceiling. The chancel is one of the focal points, with its ribbed dome, whose spandrels are decorated with grotesque motifs. The main altarpiece, in Baroque style, made of gilded and polychrome carving, houses a canvas representing the patron saint, Saint John the Baptist, and is attributed to the workshop of the painter Manuel André, associated with master Garcia Fernandes. Upon entering, to the right, is the baptistery, with its font, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling.
In addition to its religious importance for the local community, the Church of Saint John the Baptist also plays a significant role in the cultural life of Óbidos. At the beginning of the 21st century, the building was adapted to function as a Parish Museum, allowing the public to appreciate not only its architecture and sacred art, but also exhibitions that are frequently held within its premises. This cultural space offers a unique perspective on the region's spiritual and artistic heritage, inviting visitors to a moment of contemplation and historical discovery.
