The Church of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres is located in the tranquil urbanization of Castanhal, part of the locality of Alvados e Alcaria, in the municipality of Porto de Mós. Integrated into a serene landscape, this parish church marks the presence of a local community, offering a calm and genuine atmosphere. Its location invites a moment of pause and appreciation of the village environment.
The history of the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres has its origins in a private chapel, which in 1604 obtained permission to celebrate mass. Over the centuries, this primitive structure underwent successive enlargements and remodels, reflecting the community's growth and needs. The building we see today acquired its current form in a process that culminated in 1940, the result of a long and continuous evolution.
The church's architecture combines Mannerist and Neoclassical elements, bearing witness to different periods of construction and renovation. A plaque above the main door commemorates a significant enlargement in 1638. Later, in 1741, the main church was inaugurated. In the 19th century, the structure received significant additions, such as the new sacristy in 1854 and the bell tower in 1867. In 1890, the pulpit was installed, and the first general restorations began in 1912, extending until 1940, the year when the churchyard, the stone cross (cruzeiro), and the tower clock were also added.
Inside, the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres reveals details that deserve attention. The main nave is covered by a three-plane wooden ceiling, while the chancel features an elegant false vault. Among the various altarpieces, a Neoclassical style example stands out. In the chancel, it is possible to admire a set of tile panels dated 1936, works of art produced at the prestigious Viúva Lamego factory in Lisbon. A side altar is dedicated to the church's patron saint, Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres.
