The Church of Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Ansião is located in the heart of the village, right next to the building that now houses the Town Hall. This central location makes it an easily visible and accessible point for anyone exploring the town of Ansião.
The history of this church dates back to the second half of the 17th century, when it is presumed to have originated as a private chapel, belonging to the family of D. Luís de Meneses, the 3rd Count of Ericeira. As early as the beginning of the 18th century, more precisely in 1702, the building underwent a profound renovation, driven by the Jesuit Priest Dr. António dos Santos, as evidenced by a plaque inside.
For centuries, this church played a central role in the life of the community, hosting Eucharistic celebrations every Sunday morning and on holy days. Its strategic location, next to the old royal road that connected the north to the south of the country, made it a stopping and reference point for the many travelers of the time.
Upon entering the church, visitors can observe various elements that enrich its artistic heritage. On the ceiling, the Coats of Arms of Portugal stand out, inviting a closer look at their detail. The space also houses a set of significant sculptures, among which stand out the images of the patron saint, Our Lady of Conception, and Our Lady of Sorrows. It is also possible to observe a blazoned tomb, which adds a touch of solemnity and memory to the ambiance.
