Located in the village of Guia, it is part of the parish of Guia, Ilha e Mata Mourisca, in the municipality of Pombal, Leiria district.
It is one of the most emblematic buildings in the area, and has been classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1978.
Its construction dates back to the 17th century. It was built with adobes, a type of brick made from sun-dried earth. The church is about 18 meters long and 9 meters wide.
The settlement of Guia grew around this hermitage, which was dedicated to the protection of navigators.
It has three altars, with the main one dedicated to Our Lady of Guia. The chancel is separated from the church nave by a stone arch.
The gilded carved altar, restored in 2005, stands out, as does the wooden ceiling with painted panels, which is also scheduled for restoration. The sacristy door is highly decorated, with elements linked to the Age of Discoveries.
According to tradition, a lost sailor promised to offer a glass roof to the hermitage if he managed to return safely. He fulfilled the promise, and a part of that roof still exists in the building today.
The patron saint of the parish is on the main altar, but it is also worth observing an older image of Our Lady of Guia, on a side altar, which has been carefully restored.
It is a place of religious, artistic, and historical value, that invites contemplation and discovery. Ideal for those who appreciate heritage and local traditions.
