The Santo António Caves are located in Alvados and Alcaria, within the municipality of Porto de Mós. This site is integrated into the natural landscape of the Serras de Aire and Candeeiros Natural Park, sharing its geological characteristics and the particular beauty of the region, marked by rock formations and underground environments.
Its inclusion in this karst landscape, with its particular geological features, highlights the speleological richness of the region and the unique nature of this well-preserved underground environment.
The story of the discovery of the Santo António Caves dates back to June 2, 1955, when two men, working near a place known as Pedra do Altar, were surprised by a bird. While trying to catch it, the animal took refuge in a rock crevice. Curiosity led the men to enter through this opening, and it was thus, accidentally, that they revealed the existence of this remarkable natural formation.
This underground system, shaped over millions of years by geological processes, reveals itself as a notable example of the region's geological evolution, adding an intriguing chapter to the local natural history.
Inside the Santo António Caves, a vast space is discovered, occupying an area of approximately 6,000 square meters. The main chamber impresses with its dimensions, measuring about 80 meters in length by 50 meters in width, and reaching a maximum height of 43 meters.
The visit begins through an artificial tunnel that leads to a first chamber, where it is possible to admire an extensive natural lake. This body of water serves as a transition to a narrower passage that unfolds into a monumental chamber. This main chamber is remarkable for its size and unique beauty, adorned with a profusion of stalagmites and stalactites that shape fascinating rocky landscapes.
The environment inside the Santo António Caves maintains a stable temperature, oscillating between 16ºC and 18ºC, thanks to a natural chimney that ensures ventilation of the space. This feature contributes to a comfortable experience during the exploration of the site, regardless of external conditions.
The grandeur and richness of the geological formations have earned the Santo António Caves special recognition. They are considered by experts and the general public as one of the most beautiful and notable caves in Europe, standing out for their natural composition and the unique experience they offer to visitors.
