Galeria Nova Ogiva is located in the heart of the historic village of Óbidos. Situated on Rua Direita, one of the main arteries of the village within the walls, it is easily accessible to anyone exploring the historic center.
This cultural space was created in 1970, on the initiative of sculptor José Aurélio, who resided in Óbidos at the time. The gallery, initially known simply as Ogiva, had a period of intense artistic and cultural activity, though for only a few years.
After a long hiatus of about thirty years, the gallery was revitalized and reopened its doors, becoming known as Nova Ogiva. This reopening reinforced its role as a point of reference in the history of art and the village of Óbidos itself.
Galeria Nova Ogiva is primarily dedicated to contemporary art. It functions as a dynamic hub for the presentation of exhibitions and other contemporary artistic manifestations, seeking to introduce the public to current trends and creators.
The space hosts exhibitions, both individual and collective, by renowned artists in the Portuguese contemporary art scene, such as Ângelo de Sousa, Joana Vasconcelos, José Aurélio, Pedro Cabrita Reis, among others. It is a place where visitors can encounter current artistic expressions.
Integrated into Óbidos' cultural network, Galeria Nova Ogiva stands as a significant landmark in the village's museological itinerary. It represents a continuous commitment to the decentralization of artistic dissemination and the promotion of quality contemporary art.
The gallery contributes to Óbidos' cultural dynamism, offering visitors the opportunity to experience and appreciate artworks that reflect the languages and themes of contemporary art, in articulation with the village's historic context.
