The Chapel of São Simão stands in an elevated position in the municipality of Figueiró dos Vinhos, in the locality of Aguda, more precisely in the Fato area, almost at the top of São Simão Hill. Its unique location grants it an atmosphere of quietude, standing out in the surrounding landscape. From there, the gaze reaches the natural beauty that stretches across valleys and mountains, offering a tranquil setting and a wide perspective over the Além da Ribeira area.
This chapel is one of the oldest temples in Figueiró dos Vinhos, with its origins dating back to the 15th century. Its construction was an initiative of João Vicente, who was then the Prior of Aguda and a servant of Count D. Fernando. A Gothic inscription, visible on the building itself, attests that the chapel was completed in the year 1458. The space is dedicated to Saint Simon, a central figure on the main altar, and also to Saint Jude Thaddeus, reflecting the devotion of old.
The architecture of the Chapel of São Simão reveals the passage of time and the different phases of its construction. The oldest part of the temple is marked by the Gothic style, visible, for example, in a distinctive opening on the south facade. Subsequently, the chapel underwent expansions. In 1678, a room intended for the collection of alms was added. Later, in 1698, the main portal was renovated, with this date engraved on the lintel. The porch that precedes it, from the same period, features three access openings, one of which is currently blocked. The opening on the south side preserves, on its keystone, the date 1675.
The elevated position of the Chapel of São Simão provides an atmosphere of elevation and contemplation. Surrounded by an imposing natural landscape, which includes the rock formations of Fragas de São Simão, the chapel invites observation of the vast panorama. The tranquility emanating from this place, combined with its history and the privileged view of the surroundings, offers an experience of serenity and connection to nature and the past.
