Situated in the locality of Rouxinol, within the Rio Alcaide urbanization, in the municipality of Porto de Mós, the Hermitage of Santo António stands on an elevated point. Its position atop a hill grants it a distinct visibility in the surrounding landscape.
From this location, the perspective extends to the vicinity of the village and the mountainous terrain of the region, providing an environment conducive to observing the surrounding area.
The history of the Hermitage of Santo António dates back to the 17th century, with its initial construction dated around 1615. Its construction was a community effort, financed by alms from the faithful dedicated to Santo António, reflecting the popular devotion of the era.
Over the centuries, the hermitage underwent several interventions. The porch we observe today was added in 1753, and in the 20th century, in 1971, an enlargement of the chancel was carried out, adapting the space to the needs and times.
With a rectangular plan, the Hermitage of Santo António is distinguished by the details that enrich its interior. The space is adorned with a set of 17th-century tiles, in shades of blue and yellow, produced in Lisbon, which cover some of its surfaces.
In the triumphal arch, which marks the transition between the nave and the chancel, a tile panel highlights the image of Santo António, the patron saint. On the walls, mural paintings can also be observed, featuring a figure with a crucifix on their chest. On the main altar, the image of the patron saint is found, inviting contemplation.
Due to its location atop a hill, the Hermitage of Santo António offers a panoramic view of the landscape. This elevated point allows for an extensive observation of the village and the surrounding mountains, standing out as a place to appreciate the configuration of the territory.
It is an invitation to contemplate the natural environment and the urban layout that extends at the hermitage's feet, highlighting the relationship between the building and its geographical context.
