In the charming village of Batalha, the equestrian statue of Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira stands majestically in the main square. This central position, in front of the south facade of the imposing Monastery of Batalha, gives it remarkable visibility and a setting that underlines its historical and symbolic importance to the location.
Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira, one of the most charismatic figures in Portuguese history, was a nobleman and general who played a decisive role in asserting the kingdom's independence in the 14th century. Known as the Holy Constable, his military genius and bravery were fundamental for Portugal to preserve its sovereignty against Castile, during a critical period in national history.
His connection to Batalha is profound, as it was in the field of São Jorge, near the village, that the famous Battle of Aljubarrota took place in 1385. This decisive victory, under his command, secured the throne for Dom John I and the continuation of Portugal as an independent nation, leading to the construction of the Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, the great monument that rises behind the statue.
The statue, inaugurated in 1968, is a work by sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida Vaz Martins. It depicts Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira on horseback, brandishing a sword in his right hand, symbolizing his leadership and courage in combat. The bronze piece rests on a robust stone plinth, bearing inscriptions that recall his most important military victories: "ATOLEIROS 1384", "ALJUBARROTA 1385", and "VALVERDE 1385".
On the plinth, one can also observe the Pereira family coat of arms, a detail that links the public figure of the Constable to his origins. The statue serves as a point of reflection on the achievements of a man who dedicated his life to the cause of the nation.
Beyond his military achievements, Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira distinguished himself by his profound faith and devotion. After a life dedicated to the defense of the kingdom, he embraced the religious life as a lay brother at the Convent of Carmo, in Lisbon, where he became known as Frei Nuno de Santa Maria. He was canonized in 2009, a recognition of his exemplary life, becoming the Holy Constable.
His presence in Batalha, through this imposing statue, continues to be a lasting testament to his vital role in the formation of Portugal. The figure of Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira inspires and reminds us of the courage, loyalty, and determination that shaped the destiny of a people.
