The Cruzeiro da Memória (Cross of Memory) is located in an area of Santa Iria, in Pinhal, Óbidos municipality, marking a reference point at the entrance to the village. Its isolated yet prominent placement in the landscape allows it to define the space that extends beyond Óbidos' ancient walls. This monument is included in the special protection area covering the Castle and the urban centre of the village, underscoring its importance within the region's heritage.
Built in the 16th century, the Cruzeiro da Memória marks a fundamental event in Portuguese history. This site is the legendary spot where D. Afonso Henriques' troops are believed to have camped before the conquest of Óbidos from the Moors. On the cross's pedestal, an inscription in Gothic characters, though currently faded, perpetuates this memory: "IN MEMORY OF THE TAKING OF ÓBIDOS BY ASSAULT THROUGH THE GATE OF TREASON, BY D. AFONSO HENRIQUES, CHRISTIAN KING ON JANUARY 10, 1148". It is, therefore, a portal to the past, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the events that shaped the village's identity.
The cross itself is a remarkable 16th-century piece, exhibiting distinctive characteristics of the Manueline style. The cross features arms ending in fleur-de-lis, and the plinth supporting it displays rich vegetal decoration. Of particular interest is its ambivalent nature: one side shows the figure of Christ crucified, while the other reveals a delicate representation of the Pietà. This entire ensemble is protected by a quadrangular structure, built of robust stonework and masonry. This small porch features full-arch openings (two doors and two windows with chamfered sides, all safeguarded by iron grilles) and is crowned by a unique octagonal pyramid-shaped roof, whose interior is defined by a double ogive.
Despite being situated in an urban area, the Cruzeiro da Memória offers an environment of tranquility and invites contemplation. Its prominent position and the historical narrative surrounding it make it a significant stopping point for those seeking to understand Óbidos' deep connection to its past. It is a place that allows visitors a moment of pause and reflection on the history and symbolism that this monument, beneath its unique porch, represents.
