Category: Civil Architecture > Museum
District: Leiria > Porto de Mós > Porto de Mós > Quinta da Mirinha
Location
The Central das Artes is located in Porto de Mós, integrated into the urban area of Quinta da Mirinha. This cultural space is conveniently positioned within the village, making it accessible to those exploring the municipality. Its integration into the urban fabric allows for easy access, without being isolated, thus becoming part of the community's daily life.
From Power Plant to Cultural Center
This remarkable building has a rich history dating back to the 1930s. Originally, it operated as a
thermoelectric power plant, playing a fundamental role in bringing electricity to Porto de Mós, a revolutionary novelty at the time. Its operation depended on coal extracted from the Bezerra mines, a direct link to the region's geology and industrial activity. Interestingly, beyond its primary function, this old power plant already promoted culture, possessing a cinema room where the chief electrician showed films to the population. After decades of inactivity, the space underwent a profound revitalization, transforming into a modern cultural hub, but always with the care to preserve its
memory and industrial character.
A Space for Culture and Art
Currently, the Central das Artes is a dynamic cultural center that hosts various forms of artistic expression and events. The remodeling project sought to create a harmonious coexistence between the original structure and the new interventions, resulting in an environment that honors the past while embracing the future. Inside, we find different areas dedicated to
various exhibitions, ranging from the municipality's cultural heritage to contemporary art shows. It also features an auditorium, which complements the cultural offerings, serving as a stage for various initiatives. The Central das Artes thus establishes itself as a central point in the cultural revitalization of Porto de Mós, valuing local art and history, and providing diverse experiences to its visitors.
