The 18 January 1934 House-Museum is located in Largo 18 de Janeiro de 1934 (18 January 1934 Square), a name that immediately references the date it commemorates. Situated in Casal Galego, an area within the town of Marinha Grande, this house-museum is set in a typical urban environment, characterized by calmness and proximity to the local community. Its location allows for an immersion into the town's reality, providing an environment for reflection on its historical significance.
This space is dedicated to the remembrance of a crucial moment in Portugal's social and political history. In 1934, with the imposition of a new National Labour Statute by the ruling regime, free trade unions were prohibited. In response, a general strike was called for January 18th across the country, aiming to overthrow the government. Although the insurrection was contained in other regions, in Marinha Grande, the glassworkers dared to seize power.
For a few hours, the workers of Marinha Grande controlled the town, occupying the Post Office and the GNR (National Republican Guard) station. This act of rebellion, unique in Portugal on that day, demonstrates the bravery and determination of the local population in the face of repression. Although the revolt was crushed and its leaders persecuted, the event remained a milestone of resistance and a powerful symbol of workers' struggles for justice and freedom.
The House-Museum is, in essence, a dwelling of modest forms and dimensions, built with simple materials, typical of the era. However, its material simplicity contrasts with the deep symbolic weight it carries. More than a simple building, it has been transformed into a guardian of the memory of 18 January 1934.
This place was conceived so that the very structure of the house would evoke the humility of the lives of the workers who rose up there, allowing visitors a more intimate connection with the events that shaped its history. It is a palpable testament to the resilience and courage of a community that, for a few hours, defied an authoritarian regime and left seeds of inspiration for future generations.
