Architecture and History at its Core

Dating back to 1912, Casa do Arco is a remarkable example of Art Nouveau architecture in Leiria, resulting from a project by architect Ernesto Korrodi. The building's name derives from its most striking feature: an imposing arch which, besides being a central architectural element, serves as a link between two structures, expanding the original living area. On the site where Casa do Arco now stands, there were, until the 19th century, the hospital and the Albergaria da Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Leiria. Furthermore, this area was intimately connected to Leiria's old Jewish Quarter, with the adjacent street being a path to the Hebrew public baths, lending the place a profound historical resonance.

Artistic Details and Ambiance

The main arch of the house has been transformed into a glazed gallery, an architectural reference to the ancient cloister, enriched by capitals and columns that accentuate its beauty. This gallery, in particular, draws inspiration from Leiria Castle, establishing a visual and symbolic connection with the city's most prominent monument. The tile panels adorning the building are an exponent of Art Nouveau, telling stories and adding vibrant color to the facade. The balconies, with their detailed stonework, and the pergola of the inner courtyard, contribute to an ambiance that evokes a certain Italian-inspired romanticism.
