The Chapel of São Saturnino stands in a small paved square, at the crossroads in the Albarrol area, in Pousaflores, municipality of Ansião. The complex stands out for the contrast between the white of its walls and the soft green of the surrounding vegetation.
The rural surroundings provide a tranquil environment, with scattered dwellings and a landscape of agricultural fields stretching into the distance, reflecting the typical harmony of the villages in the central interior of Portugal.
The presence of the chapel dates back at least to the mid-19th century, when it was mentioned in parish studies as one of the places of worship in the parish. According to Dr. Costa Simões, mass was no longer celebrated in this temple in 1848, which reveals its more symbolic and communal role than liturgical one over the centuries.
Despite the interruption of celebrations, the Chapel of São Saturnino remains a testament to local devotion, preserving traces of the rural past and the tradition of small hermitages built by residents over time.
The facade features a simple triangular pediment, topped by a cross and a stone statue evoking the figure of the patron saint. Access is through a small porch supported by columns, creating a transition space between the exterior and interior.
Inside, the barred door suggests a small-plan space, finished with whitewashed walls and an absence of exuberant ornamentation. This sobriety reinforces the sense of recollection and closeness to the community's religious memory.
