The Chapel of Saint Michael is located on a small hill in the Bairro de São Miguel, in the locality of Rio Alcaide, within the municipality of Porto de Mós. Its position, historically, connected the village center to the Ribeiro valley, suggesting a natural link and a landmark in the local landscape. The surrounding lands are still known today as "São Miguel", which reinforces the strong identity of the place with the chapel's patron saint.
Although the Chapel of Saint Michael, in its current configuration, dates back to the 18th century, its history is much older, with references to a place of worship dedicated to Saint Michael already present in medieval documents. Ancient accounts, such as "O Couseiro", note its existence and the presence of a full-body image of Saint Michael. There are indications, through foundation remnants, that the chapel was once considerably larger than it appears today. Near this hermitage, according to local tradition, there existed the first settlement of the village, which was abandoned due to lack of water.
Since ancient times, the Chapel of Saint Michael has been a central point of faith and veneration for the local community. Popular tradition attributes to the old image of Saint Michael venerated here the power to cure ailments, through a simple and humble ritual. In the past, many people came here to ask for healing, offering in return only a cake baked in the embers, which was then shared by the young shepherds who frequented the area. Its management and care have always been the responsibility of the parishioners themselves, which underlines the strong connection of the population to the chapel. Devotion remains alive, with the annual celebration of masses on the occasion of the feast of São Miguel do Juncal.
The Chapel of Saint Michael is a small-scale building, reflecting the simplicity and authenticity of rural religious heritage. Over the centuries, it has undergone transformations but has retained its essence. In recent years, renovation work has been carried out, both inside and outside, with the aim of preserving its structure and resolving problems that threatened its integrity, such as cracks and infiltrations. This continuous attention ensures that the chapel can continue to be a place of visit and cultural value for future generations.
