The Chapel of S. Bartolomeu is located in Pereiro de Baixo, in the locality of Pousaflores, municipality of Ansião. Situated on a gentle rise in the terrain, it is surrounded by olive groves, almond trees, and cork oaks that dot the agricultural landscape.
Access is via quiet rural paths, lending the place an atmosphere of tranquility. The surroundings offer expansive views of the valley, with the green of the nearby pine forest standing out.
According to Dr. Costa Simões, in 1848 the public chapels of the parish included that of S. Bartolomeu, in Pereiro de Baixo. At that time, the author noted that mass had not been celebrated in this chapel for many years, a sign of the changes in local religious attendance.
Built in the mid-19th century, it has maintained its original design over time without major interventions. Its whitewashed walls and granite elements testify to the characteristic simplicity of small rural hermitages.
The simple volume develops into a single nave, covered by pitched ceramic tiles. The main facade features granite quoins and a small wooden porch that protects the straightforward portal.
Inside, ex-votos and images of popular devotion remain, resting on the cement floor. The light entering through the narrow side windows creates a subtle interplay of light and shadow, enhancing the contemplative character.
Despite the interruption of regular celebrations, the chapel remains an identity marker for the inhabitants of Pousaflores. During local festivities, it continues to welcome those seeking a moment of reflection.
The harmony between the simple architecture and the natural surroundings invites a contemplative pause, revealing the historical and symbolic importance of this small temple within the rural context of Ansião.
