The Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels (Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos) is situated in the Sítio da Nazaré, an elevated area of the town distinguished by its unique surroundings. Its privileged location allows visitors to discover a particular aspect of Nazaré's urban environment, in a place with its own atmosphere and a unique perspective over the town.
The construction of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels, also referred to as a Hermitage, dates back to the 16th century. However, its historical and symbolic relevance precedes this period by many centuries. According to local tradition, it was on this exact spot that in the distant 8th century, specifically in 711 AD, the monks Frei Rodrigo and Frei Romano arrived, bringing with them the image of Our Lady of Nazaré from Mérida. This narrative, deeply rooted in popular faith, gives the chapel a unique significance and a prominent place in the town's history.
Although it has undergone interventions in later periods, the chapel preserves elements of its 16th-century design. The porch at the entrance stands out, an element that evokes its original and welcoming character. The chapel's interior, with a single nave, was once adorned with 17th-century tiles, a detail that highlights the transformations and embellishments it has undergone. The altarpiece of the main altar and two 16th-century painted panels enrich its artistic collection, revealing its cultural and heritage importance.
Beyond its architectural and historical value, the Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels remains an active site in the community's religious life. It is traditionally used for the celebration of the Procession of the Lord of the Stations of the Cross (Procissão do Senhor dos Passos), which takes place annually three weeks after Carnival. This continuous use underscores its importance as a meeting and worship point, preserving Nazaré's traditions and cultural identity throughout the centuries.
The Chapel of Our Lady of the Angels is classified as a National Monument. This official recognition underscores its unique importance as an integral part of Nazaré's architectural and cultural heritage. This formal classification highlights the chapel's exceptional value and the need for its preservation, making it a site of notable interest for those seeking to learn about the region's historical and cultural legacy.
