This chapel is located in a rural area of the municipality of Alvaiázere, next to a trail lined with holm oaks and scrub typical of the central Alentejo region. Access is via a dirt track, ideal for those who appreciate walking small pedestrian routes.
In the surroundings, the gentle hills and olive groves create a country setting where, at dusk, the sun's rays filter through the treetops, giving the space a tranquil atmosphere.
The chapel was built to commemorate the memory of the "Alminhas" (souls in purgatory) and to honor Saint John the Baptist. Inside, a tile panel depicts the child saint with a lamb, evoking his role as a precursor to the Messiah and protector of souls in purgatory.
This type of popular construction served as a place of prayer and reflection for travelers who crossed these paths, reinforcing the link between the sacred and the everyday.
Built in whitewashed masonry, the chapel features a grated niche housing a small ceramic image of Saint John the Baptist. The contrast between the white background and the vibrant colors of the tile panel highlights the artistic value of the ensemble.
The simple and compact form of the building, combined with the decorative elements, reflects the tradition of rural devotion and the artisanal know-how that endures in the region.
