The Old Chapel of Pêra is located in the tranquil village of Pêra, integrated into the municipality of Castanheira de Pera. It is situated in an area that reflects the historical essence of the settlement, offering a glimpse into its rural and community past.
Its location in the village allows visitors to experience the serene and traditional atmosphere that characterizes this region, far from the hustle and bustle of urban centers. Its presence in the landscape of Pêra underscores the antiquity and continuity of local life.
This chapel is one of the oldest religious buildings in the municipality of Castanheira de Pera, having been built in 1695. Its 17th-century foundation grants it a prominent place in the region's heritage, bearing witness to centuries of devotion and community life.
Throughout its existence, the chapel has been intimately linked to the lives of local families. In 1774, a license was granted for the opening of a door connecting the chapel to the estate of Father Domingos Dinis Pereira, allowing his family members to attend celebrations, which illustrates its importance in the social context of the time.
Dedicated to Saint Sebastian, the chapel features characteristics that mirror the architecture of its time. In the bell tower, the element housing the bell, it is possible to observe a bell dating from 1747, a detail that adds historical value to the ensemble.
Inside, next to the main altar, the iron railings of the communion rail feature a unique engraving: the date September 12, 1881. This inscription suggests a period of significant interventions or improvements carried out in the chapel, marking an important moment in its conservation and adaptation over the years.
